If you’re a traveling videographer, a monopod is an essential tool that provides stability and enhances production value. These monopods are compact, lightweight, portable, and affordable. However, with the emergence of various camera technologies, it’s important to choose a monopod that can support the weight of your specific camera system. There are even monopods that can double as selfie sticks for those who enjoy capturing self-portraits.
Let’s explore some of the different monopods available and determine which one suits your camera needs. Personally, I have used and currently own the Manfrotto MM290C4 Carbon Fiber Monopod, which I highly recommend.
Smartphones, Action, and Compact Cameras

The Manfrotto Compact Xtreme 2-in-1 is an excellent monopod for smaller cameras like GoPros or Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras. It’s lightweight, weighing just 320g, and can reach a maximum height of 131cm. With this monopod, you can easily achieve stable recordings with small cameras. However, it’s important to note that it may feel top-heavy when used with heavier cameras like the Gh4 coupled with a 50mm lens and ND filter.
This monopod comes with a 1/4″ thread and a GoPro adapter, making it convenient for various camera setups. Additionally, it features a hand strap at the rear of the pole, allowing for quick angle adjustments from selfie mode to capturing landscapes.
For added versatility, you can pair this monopod with the TwistGrip Universal Smartphone Clamp, transforming it into a professional selfie stick/monopod for your smartphone.

Mirrorless and DSLRS
If you’re traveling with a mirrorless camera like the Sony A7s II or a DSLR like the Canon 5dMkIII, there are specific monopods that cater to your needs.
The Manfrotto MM290C4 Carbon Fiber Monopod is a lightweight professional monopod perfect for capturing steady footage with your camera. It can extend to 151cm and has a maximum load capacity of 5kg, making it suitable for heavy DSLR and lens kits. Its compact size of 49cm allows for easy transportation in hand luggage.

If you prioritize stability and don’t mind sacrificing minimum fold height, the Vanguard VEO AM-264TR Aluminum Monopod with a tri-stand is an excellent choice. It offers a maximum height of 163cm and a load capacity
