DaVinci Resolve has come a long way since its color grading origins. In this review, we’ll explore the performance of its Title Generator feature.
Since the release of version 12.5 (and now at v.14), DaVinci Resolve has been making significant advancements to establish itself as not just a leading color grading software, but also as a professional NLE. While title generators may not be the defining element of an NLE, it’s always great to have an NLE that offers more than just the same old functions.
So, let’s dive into Resolve’s title generator and see how well it performs. We’ll attempt to recreate a title card from Kill Bill and a typical lower third you’d see on a news broadcast.

The Interface
Resolve’s title generator may not be revolutionary, but its user interface and fluidity are certainly admirable. It’s smarter and cleaner than Adobe’s title panel. To access the titles, you need to open the effects library and scroll down to titles on the toolbox menu.

Here, you’ll find five presets that you can drag onto the timeline, similar to Final Cut Pro. The presets include Left Lower 3rd, Middle Lower 3rd, Right Lower 3rd, Scroll, and Text.
Once you’ve added a title to the timeline, you can double-click the text bubble in the preview monitor to enter your desired text. You can also move and resize the text using the control points. However, for more customization options, you’ll need to explore the inspector panel.
