Increasing the size of a low-resolution image is not always a good idea. However, Resolve 15’s new Super Scale feature changes the game.
When it comes to using SD footage on an HD timeline, there are various techniques you can employ. You could add a background to the SD layer, duplicate and expand the layer, or increase the scale of the low-resolution media. However, the latter option often leads to pixelation, noise, and a loss of sharpness, making the image look unappealing. But fear not, because Resolve 15 introduces a game-changing solution: Super Scale.
Super Scale is a powerful upscaling feature in Resolve 15 that can resize HD footage to 8K. Unlike simply increasing the scale of the media, Super Scale utilizes an advanced algorithm to enhance image detail during the enlargement process. This means you can achieve clearer and more visually appealing results. Whether you’re working with SD media in a UHD timeline or need to zoom in on a 1080p clip in a higher resolution project, Super Scale has got you covered.

Now, you might be wondering where to find this amazing feature. Unlike other accessible tools, Super Scale is not located in the inspector or any menu panels. To access Super Scale options, simply right-click on your media and select “Clip Attributes.”

In the Clip Attributes menu, you’ll find the Super Scale settings at the bottom of the video tab. Here, you can choose from three options: Super Scale, Sharpness, and Noise Reduction. Super Scale allows you to change the size of the file, offering 2x, 4x, and 6x options. The sharpness and noise reduction settings further refine the resizing process.

Still not convinced? Take a look at the comparison image below. The screenshot on the right showcases a Super Scaled image, while the left one is a regular 1080p file. The difference in quality is evident, demonstrating the magic of the Super Scale feature. Don’t just take our word for it, try it out yourself!
