Colin is not only a talented colorist, but also a great friend of mine. As fellow freelance colorists in New York City, we’ve worked in similar circles over the years, but have never let competition get in the way of our friendship. Colin is a chill, unpretentious guy who always puts his craft first.
When it comes to his craft, Colin is a true master. He credits colorists like Patrick Inhofer, Robbie Carman, Dan Moran, Warren Eagles, Alexis Van Hurkman, Steve Hullfish, and Larry Jordan for teaching him the ropes. And he’s always looking to improve his skills and stay on top of the latest tools and workflows.
As a freelancer, Colin splits his time between working in studios and working from home. He’s built up a great reputation with clients and has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. And while he’s open to the idea of going staff, he’s happy to keep freelancing as long as the work keeps coming in.
One of the biggest challenges of being a freelancer is scheduling, but Colin takes it all in stride. He’s his own scheduler, producer, and client relations expert, and he’s always hustling to keep his rates competitive and avoid a race to the bottom.
So what’s next for Colin? He’s excited about the future of color grading and sees the lines between color and VFX blurring more and more. And he’s always looking for ways to stay relevant and improve his skills. If you’re just getting into the game, Colin’s advice is simple: know your sh*t, do your research, and get hands-on experience. And if you’re lucky, you might just end up like Colin Travers, one of the best colorists in the business.
