Lights, camera, action! While the director may get all the glory, it’s the camera assistants who are the unsung heroes of any film production. They’re the ones who ensure that the camera equipment is ready for the day’s shoot, and they’re the ones who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes. So, if you want to set your camera assistants up for success on your next film or video project, here are some tips from the filmmakers below the line.
First and foremost, come prepared. While adjustments can always be made on set, having expectations in advance will guide all the first AC’s hiring, prep the right lenses and gear, and determine point of focus. And when it comes to scheduling your day, remember that trust is key. If a set-up is complicated but well thought-out, vetted by all the principals, and properly scheduled, the crew will get behind the director and work harder as a team.
Clear communication is also essential. Until all of the decisions are settled, the first and second ACs can’t go build the camera and communicate the scene’s needs to the rest of the crew. And once you’ve got a vision and a plan, step away and let your crew do their jobs. Consult with your DP and get input on how to get the coverage you need as efficiently as possible.
Last but not least, remember to feed your crew well, show appreciation, and let them have fun! And if you’re looking for more filmmaking tips and tricks, be sure to check out the articles listed below.
