Lights, camera, safety! Filmmaking is all about pushing limits, but it’s important to remember that failure to consider risks can cause serious injuries. Every year, dozens of people are hurt on set due to preventable accidents caused by negligence and ignorance. Don’t let an injury derail your shoot or end your career. As a director or producer, it’s critical to establish that safety comes first. Let’s take a look at the most important safety concerns to keep in mind.
First up, weight. Setting up a C-stand may seem like an elementary skill, but it’s actually the most common mistake and where most injuries occur. A C-stand is capable of killing or maiming someone if not set up correctly. Anytime you’re putting lights or equipment above waist level, you need to maintain a margin of safety. Only people trained in using that particular tool should be handling it.
Next, electricity. Power is essential for lighting, but it’s also deadly. Damaged equipment and exposed wires can cause serious harm. Unless you know what you’re doing, don’t mess with it.
Falls are also a major concern. Unfortunately, falling off a ladder, scissor lift, scaffold, or rooftop is all too common. Treat climbing as a two-person job and don’t take unnecessary risks.
Finally, fatigue is the real killer. Long hours and lack of sleep dull our senses and impair our ability to assess risks. It’s up to us to prioritize rest and maintain a safe work environment.
Remember, filmmaking is a long game. Take care of yourself and those around you so you can reach your full potential. Stay safe out there!
