Are you ready to take your production skills to the next level? From how-to lifestyle television to short form social-first videos, I’ve produced and directed in many genres of production. And along the way, I’ve learned some valuable lessons that I’m excited to share with you.
First and foremost, be prepared for things to go wrong and be ready to fix them. I once had a major skin care brand shoot where the talent showed up with cupping marks all over her body. Not exactly the dewy skin we were hoping for! But with quick thinking and a talented makeup team, we were able to salvage the shoot and make it work.
Another important lesson? Be likable, smart, and have a good attitude. It’s not just about who you know, it’s about who likes you. Relationships matter in this industry, so make sure you’re building strong connections with everyone you work with.
And always be a student. Even if it’s not your department, listen in on set or on calls and make an effort to understand why every piece matters in the story. The more you know, the more you can offer your team and your resume.
Know your audience, too. Start with yourself and ask why you’re watching and engaging with content. Understanding how the content pulls in viewers and dollars is key if you want to pitch your own work.
Last but not least, check your ego at the door. Don’t let insecurities or fear take priority over getting the job done. And remember, your job isn’t who you are. Don’t get sucked into the superficiality of this industry and forget to take vacations or have relationships outside of work.
I hope these production nuggets help you stand out and always make the cut. For more tips and industry advice, check out our other articles.
