Are you curious about how 3D models seamlessly blend into live-action footage? It’s a fascinating process that requires precision and skill. In today’s world of movies and TV shows, it’s common to see a mix of live-action and animation. But have you ever wondered how they make 3D characters look like real actors? It’s all about the post-production work done in compositing, which requires solid knowledge and practice to match colors and lighting environments.
Before post-production, there are several preliminary steps to ensure success. These include video clip analysis, export to external software, and Maya creation scene. But what about the red crosses you see in the photo from the movie Life of Pi? These are tracking markers, which work as indicators for the real camera on the shooting stage. They’re essential for camera tracking and match moving, which extract camera motion information to match real footage.
PFTrack is a dedicated tool for camera tracking, and it’s loaded with features. The node panel groups the nodes by their function, including tracking, solving, distortion, geometry, photo, z-depth, spherical, stereo, export, utilities, and Python. The most relevant categories are tracking, solving, and distortion. Tracking extracts information about certain features, while solving builds the virtual camera motion in the scene. Distortion allows you to correct lens distortion and calibrate the footage.
In short, camera tracking is a feature-rich tool that requires precision and skill. With the right software and techniques, you can seamlessly blend 3D models into live-action footage and create stunning visual effects.Are you ready to take your video editing skills to the next level? With PFTrack, you can work with camera lenses and even deal with barrel/pincushion effects in your source video. But that’s just the beginning! The impact of geometry on the 3D preview result is significant, and you can add test objects to see whether the tracking works or not. And when it comes to exporting your work, PFTrack has got you covered. You can save the result to many 3D packages like Maya, 3DS Max, After Effects, and more.
But what about those times when PFTrack can’t correctly detect the focal length? That’s where the Utility tab comes in handy. The Estimate Focal feature is a lifesaver in these situations. And if you need to orient the axis to match a surface, the Orient scene is what you need.
Ready to get started? The first thing to do is import your footage into PFTrack as an image sequence. Most of the time, PFTrack can analyze the video and estimate the proper camera focal length automatically. But if you need to refine the result, you can always use the Estimate Focal Node.
PFTrack is a node-based software, and we’ll present the list of the nodes we’ll use during this presentation. The Auto and User Track nodes extract relevant features from the video clip. While the former relies on automatic operations by video processing, the latter requires user intervention. Depending on your goals, you could only use the auto tracking feature. Conversely, you might be asked to track other areas of your video manually for specific tasks.
In the User Tracking process, we’ll decide which trackers to insert. Here are a few general guidelines to follow: locate your markers in areas of the video with strong contrast, put physical markers in strategic areas where you want to insert your 3D model, and adjust the brightness, contrast, and other parameters of your video to make some features pop up.
Once you’ve introduced your user tracks, you’re ready to estimate the virtual camera movement by the previous features. The Camera Solver node accomplishes this task. Use the “Solve All” action for this task. With PFTrack, the possibilities are endless. Are you struggling with projection errors in your 3D tracking projects? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this guide, we’ll show you how to reduce projection errors and achieve accurate and smooth results.
First, let’s take a look at the different colored dots that appear on the screen. A green dot indicates that the projection is good, while a white dot means that the projection is not active now, but it will be in other frames. On the other hand, a red dot is a sign that the projection here doesn’t work well. An orange dot is in-between green and red, meaning a projection error of fewer than two pixels but more than one.
To reduce projection errors, we recommend using our current Error Graph. This tool shows how each feature behaves during the clip, allowing you to cut high peaks that influence the average projection. By doing so, you can avoid inaccuracy and camera instability issues at specific frames. With the trim tool, you can easily cut errors and achieve better results.
If a feature causes too many problems, you can deactivate it from the “Trackers” tab of the Camera Solver node and recalculate. You can also locate the origin of the coordinate system to a specific feature by selecting a green dot and clicking on the “Set Origin” tab of the Camera Solver node.
Next, let’s talk about orienting the scene. The Orient Scene node controls the grid’s translation, rotation, and scaling. To make the orientation work, we select all the three trackers on the left and set an X-Z plane. This action orients the grid so that it is aligned with the pavement. If the trackers are accurate, the grid should lie on the pavement. We only have to manually orient the grid along the Y axis (vertical) to have everything lined up.
Finally, we’ll discuss testing objects. Once the grid is aligned, we can import a few 3D models into the scene and test the tracking quality. For this purpose, we import simple objects and locate them in specific parts of the clip. The Test Object node has a series of simple 3D assets to import into the scene. While positioning 3D objects, consider snapping them to the calculated 3D points. That way, you’re sure they stick to the surface.
In more complex examples, you’ll need specific trackers where the surface changes direction or altitude. But for our example, a good scene orientation with the previous 3D points is more than sufficient. By following these tips and tricks, you’ll be able to achieve accurate and smooth results in your 3D tracking projects.Get ready to witness the magic in action! The video doesn’t include any light information, textures, shadows, etc., but it’s a crucial step to ensure that we’ve done our job well.
Moving on to the next step, the export process plays a vital role in PFTrack. With the Export node, you can prepare the scene in different file formats and file paths. I usually use Autodesk Maya for rendering, so I choose the Maya exporter. Alternatively, you can opt for FBX, 3DS Max, and other options. Once you’ve finished with the settings, you’re well on your way to integrating your first 3D element into video footage. Simply click on “Export Scene” and voila!
When you open the scene in Maya, you’ll see the image sequence in the Maya viewport with the 3D test objects. As you can see, you don’t have to worry about the camera animation. The 3D objects maintain their position as the camera moves. However, if needed, you can refine the alignment of some 3D objects to perfectly match your video. At this point, you’re ready to texture and light your scene!
