When it comes to choosing a camera for your project, there’s more to consider than just specs on a sheet of paper. For documentary work, the Canon C300 Mark II is the gold standard. Here are the top three reasons why I’m using it on my next documentary shoot.
1. The Image

While other cameras may have better slow-motion capabilities, I choose the C300 Mark II for its superior skin tones. Canon’s C-Series is known for its beautiful rendering of skin, and that’s important to me. Additionally, Canon Log 2 allows for stunning images and works seamlessly with an Alexa LUT in Premiere.

2. Reliability and Ease of Use
The C300 Mark II is a dependable workhorse. Its menu system is easy to navigate, and its ergonomics make it a pleasure to use. In extreme conditions, like filming in freezing temperatures and harsh winds, this camera never lets me down. It’s a reliable companion.
Furthermore, the versatility of the C300 Mark II is unmatched. It can be used as a stripped-down run-and-gun camera or easily adapted for larger productions with the necessary accessories.
3. Lenses

Canon’s line of lenses is extensive and easily accessible. With native compatibility and a range of options, I don’t have to rely on lens adapters. Whether I need EF mount cinema lenses or PL lenses with a PL mount equipped C300 Mark II, Canon has me covered.
In this golden age of cameras, there are many great options available. However, for me, the Canon C300 Mark II is the clear choice.
