Sony has just announced a new addition to their A7R mirrorless camera lineup: the A7R III. Prepare to be amazed by its staggering 42.4 megapixel sensor, making it a must-have for any photographer or videographer. While the camera’s body and build remain relatively the same, there are several exciting improvements to its video capabilities. The A7R III features a new gapless on-chip lens design, specifically designed to enhance low-light shooting and auto-focus capabilities. Let’s take a closer look at some of the upgrades you can expect from the Sony A7RIII.
One of the major improvements in the A7R III is its autofocus capabilities. This is fantastic news for anyone shooting with a native lens or using a compatible adapter with autofocus functionality.
An evolved image processing system and α9 camera. AF algorithms optimized for the α7R III improve AF speed, precision, and tracking performance. 399 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points provide high-density wide-area coverage. Up to approximately two times faster.
This is a game-changer for those tired of the hassle of changing SD cards in the middle of a shoot. With the A7R III, you can now record and capture stills simultaneously thanks to its two card slots that can run simultaneously.

Image stabilization has also received a significant upgrade with the new 5-axis optical image stabilizer, providing an impressive 5.5 stops of compensation. This improvement makes it easier to manage shoots in dynamic scenarios, such as filming subjects for documentaries or weddings. Who doesn’t love more stabilization?
Now, let’s talk about the improved sensor:
Enhanced image processing realizes lower noise and further extended dynamic range across a wide sensitivity range of up to ISO 32000 (standard ISO, expandable to ISO 50-102400 for stills). Moreover, upgraded Detail Reproduction and Area-specific Noise Reduction achieves noise reduction — equivalent of approx. one stop — in mid-range ISO settings.
For those familiar with the A7s II, the new sensor is a significant improvement, offering a better dynamic range. It’s an exciting prospect for photographers and videographers alike.
