Olympus’s latest camera announcement might be a game-changer for video professionals and photographers alike.
Spring is the season when camera companies unveil their latest products, leading up to the National Association of Broadcasters Show in April. And Olympus is starting off this exciting season with their newest camera announcement…
Introducing the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II
This camera has a lot of cool features to get excited about, but the most thrilling one is the 5-axis sensor stabilization. Unlike optical stabilization, this camera’s sensor stabilization takes place inside the lens. The sensor moves to compensate for any camera shake, resulting in incredibly steady shots.
While 5-axis stabilization is not new, this Olympus announcement is unique because the E-M5 uses a Micro Four-Third lens mount. This means that users can adapt a wide range of lenses to this camera, including older lenses, without having to invest in expensive new ones.
The 5-axis sensor stabilization adds 5 stops of stabilization to the image, ensuring sharp and clear photos and videos.

The E-M5 Mark II is not just a great camera for photography, but also for shooting videos. It offers various frame rates, including 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second, thanks to improved IPM and AII-I compression formats.
This camera also comes with a focus peaking function, which tells you if the image is in focus or not. However, it’s important to note that when using the HDMI 4:2:2 output, the focus peaking feature will be disabled.
The E-M5 Mark II has a 1/8” microphone input, allowing users to connect hotshoe microphones like the Rode video mic. You can even adjust the audio levels during recording for both the on-camera mic and an external mic. However, there is no audio monitoring output on this camera. To monitor sound, you will need to purchase a separate hotshoe adapter or use an external recorder.

Aside from its video capabilities, the Mark II is also an impressive camera for photography. Its 16-megapixel sensor can process an image up to 40MP. This is achieved by shooting a series of images over one second and then stitching them together to create a larger image.
Other notable features of the E-M5 Mark II include a 10 fps burst shooting mode, built-in WiFi, and a 3.0” flip-out touch screen OLED monitor. It is also the first Olympus camera to feature timecode information.
