Are you ready to take your cinematography to the next level? Look no further than the incredible robotic arms created by Motion Control Operators over the past 5 years. These devices make precision and repetitive shots a possibility, syncing live action with digital VFX. And as technology advances, they’re becoming a cinematographer’s dream tool.
Two companies leading the charge are Bot & Dolly and Mark Roberts Motion Control (MRMC). Bot & Dolly specializes in creating motion control mechanical arms with custom software for filmmakers, architects, and digital fabricators. They’ve even created machines for art and entertainment installations, like the ones used in the mind-bending video “Box.”
But their most impressive work may be their collaboration with director Alfonso Cuarón on the film “Gravity.” With the intense amount of pre-visualization required for the film, Bot & Dolly had references to the entire movement of the film. The storyboards and animated sequences planned out the film’s entire choreography, allowing them to plan all the camera movements beforehand. The result? Perfectly synced shots with digital VFX that left audiences in awe.
Meanwhile, MRMC has made a name for themselves with the Milo motion control system. The entire rig can be set up and ready to shoot in just 35 minutes, making it a favorite among filmmakers. And it’s not just for movies – the Milo even made its runway debut at Paris Fashion Week.
