Are you tired of capturing footage that looks great on camera but doesn’t make the cut in the editing suite? As an editor, I know the frustration all too well. But fear not, there’s a solution – the three-second rule. This game-changing rule requires capturing at least three seconds of uninterrupted, smooth, and usable footage. No jitters, no distractions, just pure gold. Check out this video to see it in action.
Now, you might be thinking, why stop at three seconds? Wouldn’t more footage be better? Not necessarily. As an editor, I value variety over pointless duration. If you’ve got the shot, you’ve got the shot. And if you want to play it safe, aim for seven seconds max. But remember, it’s all about quality over quantity.
Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. Some projects may require longer coverage, so it’s always best to communicate with your editor and director beforehand. That way, you can ensure your footage aligns with their vision.
