Lights, camera, action! Filmmakers often struggle with natural light, but there’s a simple solution they often overlook: the collapsable reflector. Don’t let its name fool you – this tool isn’t just for photographers. In fact, it’s a budget-friendly must-have for any filmmaker. A high-quality collapsable reflector can cost between $50-$100 and can make a huge difference in the overall production value of your video project.
If you’re a seasoned filmmaker, you probably already have one of these in your kit. But if not, it’s time to invest in one and start using it in the following ways:
1. Diffuse the Sun: Many reflectors come with a reversible sleeve that allows you to remove it and use the white, silk-like disc inside. Use it to diffuse direct sunlight during outdoor interviews or shoots. Set it up on a stand or have a PA hold it to soften harsh shadows on your talent’s face.
2. Bounce Your Backlight: When shooting outside, use the sun as a backlight to avoid harsh shadows on your actors’ faces. But this can result in underexposed talent. Use your reflector on the white or silver side to bounce sunlight back into their face and bring up their exposure. The silver side will create a harder, brighter light, while the white side will be softer and more forgiving.
3. Create a Rim Light: Sometimes, you don’t need any lighting or grip gear at all – like during golden hour. Use your reflector for a stylistic effect by placing it behind your talent and bouncing sunlight against the back of their head. This creates a beautiful rim light that emulates a fully lit scene, without any additional lights.
