Is your demo reel ready for the big leagues? As we head into a new year, it’s time to take stock of your work and consider how to showcase it. But what do directors and decision-makers really look for in a demo reel? We talked to some industry pros to find out.
First up, don’t overestimate the importance of your reel. According to DA Yirgou, Creative Director of Matte Projects, a reel isn’t as crucial as it used to be. Instead, focus on social media to showcase your growth and activity. Keep your collaborators in mind, too. Choreographer and emerging director Amy Gardner says she’s more concerned with taste and energy than a reel. And finally, say something specific with your work. Communicate your unique style and aesthetic, and invest in smaller projects if necessary to get noticed.
