Are you trying to run a film or video set like a flat organization? Think again. A clear chain of command is essential for a smooth operation. I still remember my first day on a real film set, where every person knew exactly what their role was and worked with ease. While most of my time has been spent on smaller indie and DIY productions, I’ve learned that a clear, considerate, and flexible hierarchy is vital to a shoot’s success, regardless of its scale.
So, what does the ideal set hierarchy look like? It’s not about “more important” and “less important” roles, but rather a side-by-side map that outlines how all the roles work together to get the job done. Producers and directors make the major decisions, while department heads coordinate and communicate specific plans and responsibilities with the rest of the team. Individual roles work under department heads and are equally accountable and responsible for the overall success of the project.
Remember, not every project is the same, and people may have to wear multiple hats. But with a clear chain of command in place, you just might pull off your smoothest production yet. Check out our additional resources for more industry insights and filmmaking tips and tricks.
